The Cround of the Sound Challenge Returns!

Become part of Tacoma’s running royalty! You can earn this year’s Crown of the Sound, a bonus finisher’s medal, for running with Tacoma City Marathon Association in 2024! Qualify in two different ways…finish 3 TCMA half marathon (or longer) distance races in 2024, or, finish 6 TCMA races of any distance (excluding the kids 1k runs), and you’ll earn your crown!  

Finish at least 3 of the following TCMA half marathon (or longer) distances in 2024 to qualify…

  • St. Paddy’s Day Run Tacoma Half Marathon | March 16, 2024
  • Ghost of Tacoma Half Marathon (or Marathon) | April 27, 2024
  • Tacoma City Half Marathon (or Marathon) | April 28, 2024
  • Tacoma Narrows Half Marathon | August 10, 2024
  • Mud Mountain Dam Half Marathon | September 21, 2024
  • Defiance 30k (or 50k) | October 12, 2024 

OR…  

Finish ANY 6 of the following TCMA events to qualify…

  • Ghost of Tacoma (Marathon, Half Marathon) | April 27, 2024

  • Tacoma Narrows Half Marathon (Half Marathon, 5k) | August 10, 2024
  • Mud Mountain Dam Half Marathon (Half Marathon, 5k) | September 21, 2024
  • Defiance 50k (50k, 30k, 15k) | October 12, 2024
  • Wicked Fast 5k | October 26, 2024
  • Tacoma City Turkey Trot 5k | November 28, 2024
  • Santa Runs Tacoma (10k, 5k) | December 14, 2024

All races must be completed in-person at official TCMA events in order to qualify towards the Crown of the Sound. Virtual results will not be accepted. Kids 1k races do not qualify towards Crown of the Sound.

ST. PADDY’S DAY RUN TACOMA

The St. Paddy’s Day Run Tacoma half marathon is an out-and-back course starting in downtown Tacoma.

You’ll run along the waterfront until it connects to the Ruston Way Path, where you’ll head towards the Point Ruston Waterwalk and Tacoma’s Dune Peninsula Park.  Before turning around, you’ll go up the Wilson Way Bridge for a bird’s eye veiw of the area, and then make your way back down the waterfront to finish downtown.

MUD MOUNTAIN DAM HALF MARATHON

The Mud Mountain Dam half marathon begins alongside Veteran’s Park and the South Prairie Creek, gradually taking you downhill on the Foothill Rail Trail.

You’ll pass through farmlands and forest, snaking along the Carbon River. As you continue down the Foothill Trail, you’ll make your way through the quaint towns and communities of the Cascade Junction, South Prairie, and Orting. The finish takes you across the McMillin Foothill’s Trail Bridge before running through the Historic McMillin Bridge to cross the finish line.

TACOMA CITY HALF MARATHON (OR FULL MARATHON)

The 2022 Half Marathon will be a point-to-point course running across the iconic Narrows Bridge and finishing at Tacoma’s beautiful Dune Peninsula Park at Point Ruston, situated along Commencement Bay with panoramic views of the Puget Sound, the Olympic and Cascade Mountain ranges.

Runners will enjoy a scenic, USATF-Certified and Boston Qualifying course that passes through Point Defiance Park, with over 700 acres of beautiful gardens and old growth forests. After exiting Pt. Defiance, runners will cross over the Wilson Way Bridge with a sweet half mile dowhill to the Puget Sound and Dune Peninsula Park where the Half Marathon will finish.

The Tacoma City Marathon can also be used to qualify for the Crown of the Sound.

TACOMA NARROWS HALF MARATHON

The Tacoma Narrows Half Marathon is back! We’re excited to announce the return of this event on Saturday, August 13th, which features a new half marathon and 5k course that begins and ends at Cheney Stadium! We’re partnering with the Tacoma Rainiers and are thrilled to be a part of their R Health and Wellness weekend. It’s going to be a weekend full of running and baseball fun!

The Tacoma Narrows Half Marathon is an out-and-back course that will start outside Cheney Stadium, take you across the majestic Tacoma Narrows Bridge and then bring you back inside Cheney Stadium, where you’ll run on the warning track (and where you will see yourself on the jumbotron and be able to say “Look Ma, I made it!”).

MUD MOUNTAIN DAM HALF MARATHON (OR FULL MARATHON)

The Fall Mud Mountain Dam Half Marathon follows the same fast, gradual downhill course as the Spring event. The race begins alongside Veteran’s Park and the South Prairie Creek, gradually taking you downhill on the Foothill Rail Trail.

The Fall event also offers a Full Marathon option that can be used to qualify for the Crown of the Sound.

SANTA RUNS TACOMA HALF MARATHON

A Tacoma tradition! A festive family affair! This is one of Tacoma’s fastest Half Marathon courses.

Starting in Downtown Tacoma, you’ll run down the Murry Morgan draw bridge to sea level and run along the Glass Museum Esplande. You’ll continue along the waterfront and hop on the Ruston Way Path and run towards Tacoma’s newest waterfront destination, the Point Ruston Waterwalk and Tacoma’s Dune Peninsula Park where you’ll turn around and fly like Santa along the flat and fast waterfront to the finish at Dock Street!
