Point Ruston Independence 5K

 

 

A 5km race on a fast, flat and downhill course starting at N. 37th & N. Vassault Street in Tacoma and finishing at Point Ruston's Grand Plaza. 

But have no fear! While this is a speedy course for fast runners, it also is a fun course for a powerwalk before your Independence Day barbeque! Everybody is welcome to participate!

 

The 5K Run and Walk starts at 8:00am sharp at N. 37th & Vassault Street. This is located very close to Vassault Park.

The finish of the 5K is at the Grand Plaza at Point Ruston on the beautiful Waterwalk.

The Grand Plaza is also where the Kids 1K will start at 9:00 am. The kid's run is an out-and-back, so the runners can cross the official finish line as well.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • A small transaction fee is assessed when registering online.
  • Price increases occur at midnight.
  • THERE IS NO DAY OF RACE REGISTRATION.
  • Register by 6/25 to receive an event t-shirt (we have to order the shirts weeks in advance). Kids runners receive cotton tees and finisher ribbons.

(Please read) TCMA Policies: All entry fees are NON-REFUNDABLE. Sorry no transfers to another individual, and no roll-overs to the following year. All participants under the age of 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian in order to participate.  Sorry, no exceptions.

Awards

Awards will be presented to the overall male and female winners of the 5K. Age group awards will be given to the following divisions: 9 & under, 10-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-80, 80 & over.

Rules

  • To be eligible for overall and age group awards you cannot be paced by or accept aid from a non-registered runner at anytime during the event.
  • USATF awards rules: if you win both an overall and age group spot you will be presented with both awards. For example: if you win both 3rd place overall and also win 1st place masters, you will receive both awards. Overall winners ARE NOT knocked out of their respective age group.

Chip Timing

All events will be chip timed by Rogue Multisport.

Your timing tag is attached to the back of your race bib. In order to receive a time your race bib must be worn on the outside of your top outer garment. Avoid bending your bib which may damage the timing tag. The timing tag is disposable so it does not need to be returned.

Water will be provided at the finish.

Gear Check

Gear check is provided for your personal items at the start line and brought to finish. Please tear your gear check tab off of your bib, fill out and attach to your gear check bag. Your gear check bag was given to you at packet pick up. Please do not put valuables in your bag. We are not responsible for lost or stolen items. You may claim your bag after you finish by providing your bib number.

You can also pick up your packets near the start line at Vassault Park on race day at 7:00am. Please do not plan to pick up the packets last minute - lines may be long and the race will start on time.

    Bib number with timing chip
    Event shirt

Packet Pick Up Information

FAQ

When does Registration open for the 2016 race? May 16th, 2016 at 10:00am

When does Registration close? Online registration closes at midnight on 7/1/2016.

Shuttle bus information: The shuttle bus will begin taking racers from the finish (at the Grand Plaza, right in front of the movie theater) to the start (Vassault Park) at 8:45 am and continue until all runners are shuttled back to the start.

What if I sustain a injury or can't make it to the event, what are my options? Sorry, there are no refunds or roll overs for medical reasons. 

Can an entry be transferred to someone else? No.
    
Can I pick up someone else's race packet? Yes, as long as you have permission from them to do so. Written permission is not required.

Can I pick up my race packet on race day? Yes, but is it strongly encouraged that runners pick the packets up on July 3rd.

What time does the race start? The 5k starts at 8:00 AM. The kids 1K run starts at 9:00 AM.

Will there be professional photographers on the course? Yes, our professional photography is provided by On The Run Events. 2016 Photos can be found here.

Is the race Chip Timed? Yes, Chip Start and Chip Finish. The chips are on the bib, so there is no need to return anything at the finish. Bibs must be worn on front of the shirt. Do not fold or cover up the bib.

Do you get a commemorative shirt when you sign up?   Each participant who registers before the deadline receives a technical running shirt. This year it will be a tank top with the race logo - and of course we will stick with the red, white and blue theme.

Is the course fast? Yes, it is a net downhill course!

Can you walk the 5k? Yes

Are strollers allowed? Yes.

Are dogs allowed? Sorry, not for this event.

What is the average temperature for July in Tacoma? 53' for the low, 75' for the high.  Average race start temperature is 60'

How far is the Start from the Finish line? 1.8 miles for the most direct route.

Street parking: Located near the corner of N. 37th and Vassault St. 

Shuttle Bus from Finish

Shuttle Bus: Begins at 8:45 am from the FINISH LINE area (at the Point Ruston Grand Plaza, right in front of the movie theater) and will make round trips back to the START LINE.

PARK BY THE FINISH LINE

For the ambitious: Park at the FINISH LINE and warm up to the START LINE. Or cool down back to your car at the FINISH the shortest route is 1.87 miles click HERE << for warm up cool down route. But please note that parking will be limited.
